Research and funding

  • Development of Novel Food Ingredients that Promote Health via Modulation of the Gut Microbiota

Fiber is known to be the main and preferred energy source for the gut microbiota, but the interplay between carbohydrate structure and the microbial community involved in its breakdown remains poorly understood. With this project, we aim to investigate fermentation of a range of fiber types (cellulosic, hemicellulosic, pectic and lignin-rich), with a view towards developing health-promoting food ingredients, that potentially could be a sugar replacer.

  • Research funding: Rowett Institute of Nutrition and health RESAS studentship (Oct 2017 – March 2021)
