Research and funding

  • Chemical and biological properties of a novel factor that modulates wall enzyme action in plants: This project aims to determine the nature and some biological and chemical properties of XAF (XET 'activating' factor), which was recently documented and which 'activates' XET, probably by solubilising it from binding sites in the plant cell wall. The work is a follow-up of Takeda and Fry (2004), Control of xyloglucan endotransglucosylase activity by salts and anionic polymers. Planta 219, 722-732. We speculate that XAF may constitute a novel mechanism of plant cell growth control.
  • Research funding: Vietnamese government and the University of Edinburgh (SBS)
